MINI & BMW Drivetrain Error Message: VANOS, Camshaft faults, how to fix it

Mini Drivetrain Malfunction Error Message. We explore some of the reasons for the DRIVETRAIN message occurs on the MINI's and BMW's fitted with the B48m, B38m and B38u engines.

Cause:

BMW had several attempts at solving this problem with different designs of VANOS oil control valves and camshafts. On the early cars components inside the VANOS units can break up and on the camshafts the stator on the end that has the magnetic pickups on can become lose end move which results in the engine's ECU thinking the timing is out.

VANOS & Camshaft Fault Codes

131101 - Crankshaft - exhaust camshaft 2, reference: angle difference
outside limit value
130108 - VANOS solenoid valve, inlet: Position not reached
130304 - VANOS, exhaust: control fault, camshaft jammed
130308 - VANOS solenoid valve, exhaust: Position not reached
131401 - VANOS solenoid valve, exhaust: Not controllable during cold start
131808 - VANOS solenoid valve, exhaust: Position not reached during
cold start
131908 - VANOS solenoid valve, inlet: Position not reached during cold start
130E20 - Intake camshaft, crankshaft: Implausible with each other,
angular offset outside of tolerance range
130F20 - Exhaust camshaft, crankshaft: Implausible with each other,
angular offset outside of tolerance range
