Free Time was formed in 2002 in Athens, Greece, by classical guitarist and arranger Spiros Mihael. “O Grande Amor” is the group’s first recording, and it’s a tribute to the “father” of bossa nova Antônio Carlos Jobim, featuring also three tracks of other great Brazilian composers (Pixinguinha, Dorival Caymmi, Edu Lobo). It’s a beautiful compilation of some of Jobim’s popular hit songs along with some of the less recorded ones, in fresh arrangements by Spiros Mihael.
Mihael's arrangements evoke the rich sound-colours of a chamber music ensemble, spiced up by Petros Klampanis’ dynamic yet lyrical playing on the bass, Christos Asonitis’ original Brazilian grooves on the drums and percussion, and of course Miranda Verouli’s unique style of performance, mixing jazz vocals with genuine Brazilian feeling, due to her jazz education and deep knowledge of the Brazilian culture respectively.
