I did this 3-day hike at the end of September 2020, camping in the mountains and visiting most of the main sights in this beautiful region on a big loop with a distance of about 50 km.

The weather forecast didn't look too good for that week but I decided to go anyway and was rewarded with lots of mysterious fog which sometimes blanketed everything before suddenly revealing another beautiful mountain formation.

It was an exhausting hike with lots of elevation gain, steep ascents and descents and some climbing sections secured by ropes.

Day 1: I started from Wasserauen shortly before sunrise and first headed to the Instagram famous Seealpsee with its mirror-like reflection of the surrounding mountains. From here I hiked up over the first pass to Sämtisersee before another steep ascent to the Berggasthaus Staubern.
Then I followed the ridge towards the Saxer Lücke, one of the hightlights in this region. It wasn't easy to find a good camping spot because the ground is rarely flat enough but eventually I found an incredible location right on the edge of the mountain near the famous Saxer Lücke with a beautiful view of the pointy Kreuzberg mountains.

On day 2 I first walked down to Saxer Lücke and then up to the Mutschen Sattel pass at about 2100m. From here it's an easier section to Zwinglipasshütte where I had some coffee before climbing up around the Altmann peak to Fliswand Punkt at 2334m. From this point it's a steep but short climb down to the Rotsteinpass where I rested and had delicious Rösti for lunch.
In the afternoon I hiked across the spectacular Luisengrat, a slightly difficult rocky ridge secured with ropes. It was already late afternoon when I reached the Säntis, the highest mountain of the Alpstein at 2502m. The clouds and fog rolling around the peak were quite special but it was getting late so I started descending again in the direction of Öhrli and Altenalp.
My plan was to camp near the Altenalp Towers but it was almost getting dark and a thunderstorm was brewing nearby. Luckily I found some flat ground to set up my tent and stayed dry from the rain throughout the night.

Day 3 was mostly downhill but I was tired already and it took me a while before I reached the Schäfler guesthouse for a late breakfast. It was really nice to see some ibexes strolling around and every now and then the fog lifted and revealed the amazing scenery around me.
From Schäfler I continued downhill until I reached the famous Äscher-Wildkirchli restaurant squeezed into the steep cliff side. I treated myself to a yummy ice cream with prunes and thyme crumble before finishing the hike by walking back down to the parking lot in Wasserauen.
