STEM Challenge: Float Your Boat

“Sink or float,” or buoyancy, is a concept kids start exploring at a very young age. They drop objects into water to see if they stay on top or fall to the bottom. And when they see a boat loaded with tons of heavy cartons, they may wonder how such a large object carrying that much weight stays afloat. That’s what today’s STEM challenge is all about! Join Lakeshore’s Kirk as he walks kids through every step of the process in building their own aluminum foil boat and then loading it with pennies—from planning and sketching to testing and improving. Will their boat sink, or will it float? It’s a fun, hands-on way to incorporate STEM into children’s learning time at home!
