With human civilization having now emerged as a spacefaring species...it’s critical that we work to solve the daunting science and technology challenges but also the full range of issues impacting us as humans as we embrace deep space as part of our living experience. This talk explores the constellation of issues from technology to psychology, the humanities, food, design, education, economics, ethics, etc., that must be addressed as we prepare for this next great leap of human existence.

Kris Kimel is an entrepreneur and creative thinker focused on creating highly innovative ideas and enterprises that could have the ability to achieve meaningful and transformational change. He is the co-founder and former president of the Kentucky Science and Technology Corporation (KSTC), an independent nonprofit company focused on developing ideas, policies and projects that extend science, technology, and disruptive innovation. Kimel also created and lead the IdeaFestival for 17 years...bringing together a diverse interdisciplinary range of people to discuss and explore the connections across important ideas. For over the past 20 years Kimel has been a recognized leader in the development of the “new space” R&D and commercial economy. His involvement has included early work with NASA in off-planet subsurface mining and exploration and early design/utilization of CubeSat class satellites. He is the co-founder and former chairman of Space Tango, a growing commercial space company centered on research, design, and manufacturing in space for novel applications on Earth. Most recently he created and now leads Humanity In Deep Space, a nonprofit initiative concerned with exploring the hard problems involved facing humanity as it prepares for a spacefaring future.
