Green Brunei, Panaga School and members of the Panaga community removed almost 200 kilogrammes (KG) of waste from Panaga Beach yesterday.

Panaga School Principal Cindy Bin Tahal said most of the waste was plastic bottles.

“Panaga School has established an Eco School Committee led by Stephen Coates, which encourages and inspires Years 3 to 8 students on the importance of maintaining cleanliness of the environment.”

She added that the campaign was their first time connecting with Green Brunei, and they intend to continue to collaborate for the environment’s benefit.

“The beach clean-up helped those in the Eco School Committee with a small-scale event, in readiness to replicate and grow the concept in the coming months and years,” she said.

Panaga School teachers in attendance brainstormed Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) project opportunities to embed in the classroom, following observations during the clean-up.

The brainstorm also saw a proposal to build waste management systems to help overcome and collect waste pooling in stormwater drainage systems that enter the ocean.
