Foreign Financial Account Help Tampa, St Pete , Clearwater FLorida
Many U.S. citizens have foreign accounts in various countries, and there's been a lot of news in recent years about the bank secrecy or now the non-secrecy that exists on foreign financial accounts, specifically Switzerland. When Switzerland folded and began to give up information on their U.S. citizens who have bank accounts in Switzerland, it was a new revolution. It was a new era that we found ourselves in. And IRS has capitalized on this, not only in Switzerland but many countries.
In fact, just recently, two banks in Belize, which was a tax haven country, much like Switzerland but on a smaller scale, gave up their information on U.S. citizens and paid a substantial fine to avoid any type of prosecution by the U.S. government. As a part of that concession, they also agreed not only to give up those financial accounts and the identity of the accounts, but also to give up information regarding consultants who bring them foreign financial account investors, i.e. U.S. citizen. They bring them to the bank and they structure transactions, and the bank knows these people, and they assist these people in making this happen.
So IRS now requires that they secure that information as well, and as you make a voluntary disclosure to IRS, they require you to give up that information. So IRS has gained a huge database of [inaudible 00:02:12] consultants who are helping U.S. citizens evade their taxes and avoid their reporting responsibilities on foreign financial accounts. They're going after those individuals, and as they go after those individuals, guess what happens. They end up telling the U.S. government about all of their clients. Not only in this example in Belize, but everywhere else they've taken clients.
Your chances of your being gobbled up in this big fishnet that's out here has increased substantially as time progresses. And now it's a matter of IRS talking low hanging fruit and pulling it off the tree because they have a multitude of cases out there. Eventually, if you haven't dealt with this problem, IRS will catch you. It will happen. It's not a matter of if, it's a matter of when.
Before they catch you, let's talk about a voluntary disclosure. There are a couple of different ways to do that. We've done a lot of them, we've been very successful. There are a lot of wrong ways to do it. A lot of people have done it the wrong way, and we've straightened out some of those messes. You need good advice from someone who has experience, who has knowledge about what you can and cannot do and what is your best option. We at WH Simon and Company are very happy to provide you with that information, and assist you through this process. We can provide a free consultation, give you your options after we understand your situation, and talk about what the fees might be to accomplish this, and what you can anticipate in the way of cost to IRS in the form of tax penalties and interest.
