In this recorded virtual symposium from February 8, 2023, conservator Nicol Anastassatou presented “Conservation 101" for the Nashville Parthenon. This free talk was held in honor of Cast Conservation Project, funded by the Hays Foundation. The goal of the project is to conserve, clean, and stabilize the Parthenon Marbles Cast Collection so that they remain an educational and artistic resource to all Parthenon visitors.

ABOUT THE SYMPOSIUM:
What happens to an artifact after it is excavated? What technologies and methods can help preserve ancient artifacts? This talk will explore archaeological conservation including training, best practices, and real-world examples of conservation. Join Corinth Excavations Head Conservator Nicol Anastassatou for a look at archaeological evidence from Corinth, Greece, to learn how conservators prepare and preserve artifacts for future generations.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Nicol Anastassatou is the Head Conservator of Corinth Excavations for the American School of Classical Studies, Athens, a position she has held since 2003. She holds an official license as Conservator for the Conservation of Antiquities issued by the Greek Ministry of Culture, num. 406. Nicol has been an instructor of conservation technicians and site/museum guards for the Greek Ministry of Education, General Secretariat of Lifelong Learning at the Public Vocational Training Institute of Nafplion, Argos and Corinth for over two decades. She obtained a diploma in Applied Arts (Stained glass artist and Mosaic artist) from the 2nd Technical and Vocational Educational School in Applied Arts, and later a full Diploma in Conservation of Antiquities and Works of Art at the Technological Educational Institution of Athens.

In previous roles, Nicol worked as a conservator for the Greek Ministry of Culture in several museums and sites on the islands of Delos, Santorini, Samos, Kithnos, Paros, Naxos and Mykonos, and was the Head of the Conservation Laboratory and Head Conservator for the Tholos, Stadium, and Greek Baths at the archaeological site of Epidauros.
