New Zealand Road Trip - Hanmer Springs to Kaikoura via State Highway 1 (Coastal Route) - 4K

Kaikoura and Hanmer Springs are both popular destinations for tourists visiting New Zealand’s South Island, The two places are connected by two routes, both of which are highly scenic and form part of the “Alpine Pacific Touring Route” One route follows the coastal section of State Highway 1, covered in this video and the second route, often referred to as the inland route will be uploaded shortly. Both routes follow the same course between Hanmer Springs and Waiau, where this video follows Leader Road to its junction with State Highway 1, from where the road and the Conway River run in close proximity through the Seaward Kaikoura Range of mountains to Hundalee where the road turns back into the mountains to meet the Oaro River and share it’s wide valley down to the coast at Oaro. Between Oaro and Kaikoura the mountains meet the Pacific Ocean with no coastal plain, forcing the road and railway to share a narrow often man-made ledge affording some of the most spectacular coastal views to be seen anywhere in New Zealand.
