📜 STORY BEHIND THE SONG
It was late afternoon on 1 February 2012 when Belinda’s phone vibrated again.
For weeks, her phone had been filled with missed calls and short messages from a young man waiting for her in Lae. He was counting the days, holding onto hope.
That afternoon, Belinda stood at Kimbe Wharf in West New Britain. Beside her were two neatly packed bags. The wind was strong and cold. Dark clouds covered Kimbe Bay. Heavy rain soaked the wharf and everyone waiting to board.
Belinda was travelling back to Lae, where she worked with the Morobe Mission of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. But this journey was different. She had come home to ask her father for his blessing to marry the man she loved.
She believed in doing things the right way.
She believed in respect.
She was her father’s daughter.
Her father, the late John Kembu, was a respected Seventh-day Adventist pastor in Kimbe. To Belinda, his blessing was more than tradition — it meant everything.
In Lae, the young man waited.
During their final call, she said softly,
“I will tell you as soon as I arrive.”
She laughed and added,
“I will bring you to Kimbe sooner than you think.”
That afternoon, Belinda boarded the MV Rabaul Queen, carrying her promise, her secret, and her future.
In the early hours of 2 February 2012, the ship sank off the coast of Morobe Province.
After desperate searches by air and sea, Belinda’s body was the first to be found, drifting near Alotau.
The tragedy became the worst maritime disaster in Papua New Guinea’s history. More than 300 lives were lost. Many were never found.
Four days after the sinking, the young man arrived at Hoskins Airport.
He did not come to meet Belinda.
He did not come to start a new life.
He came to receive her body.
Only then did her words truly sink into his heart.
She had brought him to Kimbe sooner than he thought.
Belinda’s story is only one among hundreds. Families were torn apart. Many were left with no bodies to bury — only memories, grief, and unanswered questions.
Flowers were thrown into the sea.
Letters were read to the waves.
Tears disappeared into deep water.
Fourteen years later, photos may fade and voices may grow quiet, but the pain of that morning on 2 February 2012 still remains.
Some wounds never fully heal.
They only learn to live with time.
