Directors rarely make great films, but when they do, most don't get the acknowledgment that great filmmakers like Martin Scorsese, Quentin Tarantino, and Steven Spielberg receive. In this video, I want to celebrate those obscure and lesser-known directors that many mainstream movie watchers probably don't know exist. Ranging from the most well-known to the most esoteric (in my opinion, of course), I'll be discussing their filmmaking style and their films while also pointing out their greatness.
Directors discussed in this video include Theo Angelopoulos, arguably the best filmmaker from Greece. With his slow, fluid-like filmmaking style, he explores life's biggest questions. Jonas Mekas, the godfather of American avant-garde cinema, shows us the beauty of everyday life. Franco Piavoli, capture the poignancy of nature and humans almost without dialogue, And Marlon Riggs, a documentarian who is one of the most important voices in queer cinema.
