According to one legend, this rock is the site of the birth of the goddess Aphrodite. She rose from the waves in this beautiful spot. The Greek name, Petra tou Romiou ("Rock of the Greek") is associated with the legendary frontier-guard of Byzantine times.

Aphrodite is the Greek goddess of love, beauty, pleasure, and procreation. Her Roman equivalent is the goddess Venus. She is identified with the planet Venus. The most prominent lover of Aphrodite is Adonis.

A local myth is that any person who swims around the Aphrodite's Rock will be blessed with eternal beauty.
