STORYLINE

Serbia's prime minister on Wednesday visited Kosovo for the first time since it declared independence just days before elections that will decide if his country turns to the West or seeks closer ties with Russia.

Vojislav Kostunica is the latest senior official to visit Kosovo, whose declaration of independence has been the key issue during campaigning.

Kostunica received a traditional Serbian welcome and was cheered and greeted by a crowd of nearly a thousand Kosovo Serbs.

Kostunica also opened a sports hall in the town of Zubin Potok, in northern Kosovo where most minority Serbs live.

"We will not allow Kosovo to be taken away. We are united on one stand, and that is Kosovo. Serbia will never allow to leave a place a land that belongs to Serbs," Kostunica told the crowd gathered at the ceremony.

He also said that territorial integrity of Serbia is the most important issue. "So that is why we will never except that Serbia is to be divided. And we will never except any deal that Solana is thinking, he is wrong. No deal for us, in return for Kosovo."

Kostunica forced early parliamentary elections after a split with Serbia's pro-Western President Boris Tadic. They both opposed Kosovo's independence declaration, but differed over their policies toward the European Union.

Kostunica said he would not have signed because the 27-nation bloc does not acknowledge Kosovo remains part of Serbia.

Kostunica's Popular Coalition is likely to enter into an alliance with Serbia's far-right Radicals as no party is likely to win an outright majority.

Kostunica's visit to Kosovo's Serb-controlled north on Wednesday is the first since Kosovo declared independence on Feb. 17.
