The history of the fish fair in Sherpur district is quite ancient and traditional. The fish fair in Sherpur district is usually organized in the month of Paush (according to the Bengali calendar) and is mainly a part of agricultural life. The main purpose of this fair was to create an opportunity for farmers and fishermen to buy and sell fish and to build a kind of social connection between them.

Origin of the fair:

Although no specific document is available about the beginning of the fish fair, it is believed that the tradition of the fair in the Sherpur region is centuries old. Although this traditional fair initially started locally, it gradually became popular. Especially, a lot of fish was harvested from water bodies and rivers during the winter. Since agriculture and fish farming are the main occupations, the people of this region used to buy and sell their products through this fair.

Features of the fish fair:
1. Fish exhibition: Various types of large-sized fish such as Katla, Rui, Mrigel, Chital, and Boal are exhibited here.
2. Local Culture: The fair also sells local culture and heritage, such as folk songs, Jatrapala, and clay items.
3. Social gathering place: This fair is not just a place to buy and sell fish, but it is also a gathering place for local people.

Continuity of tradition:

Nowadays, the Sherpur Fish Fair is not only for business purposes, but it also creates a festive atmosphere, where people of different generations participate. In many cases, various cultural programs and competitions are also organized around the fair.

Such traditional events like the Sherpur Fish Fair are an important part of the culture of Bangladesh, which has been going on for generations.

শেরপুর জেলার মাছের মেলার ইতিহাস বেশ প্রাচীন এবং ঐতিহ্যবাহী। শেরপুর জেলার মাছের মেলা সাধারণত পৌষ মাসে (বাংলা বর্ষপঞ্জি অনুযায়ী) আয়োজিত হয় এবং এটি মূলত কৃষিভিত্তিক জীবনের একটি অংশ। এই মেলার মূল উদ্দেশ্য ছিল কৃষক এবং মৎস্যজীবীদের মধ্যে মাছ ক্রয়-বিক্রয়ের সুযোগ তৈরি করা এবং তাদের মধ্যে একধরনের সামাজিক সংযোগ গড়ে তোলা।

মেলার উৎপত্তি:

মাছের মেলার শুরু সম্পর্কে সুনির্দিষ্ট কোনো দলিল পাওয়া না গেলেও এটি বিশ্বাস করা হয় যে শেরপুর অঞ্চলে মেলার ঐতিহ্য শতাব্দীপ্রাচীন। ঐতিহ্যবাহী এই মেলা প্রথমে স্থানীয়ভাবে শুরু হলেও ধীরে ধীরে তা জনপ্রিয় হয়ে উঠে। বিশেষ করে, শীতকালীন সময়ে জলাশয় এবং নদী থেকে প্রচুর মাছ আহরণ করা হতো। কৃষি ও মাছ চাষ প্রধান পেশা হওয়ায় এই অঞ্চলের মানুষ এই মেলার মাধ্যমে তাদের পণ্য কেনা-বেচা করতেন।

মাছের মেলার বৈশিষ্ট্য:
1. মাছের প্রদর্শনী: বিভিন্ন ধরনের বড় আকারের মাছ যেমন কাতলা, রুই, মৃগেল, চিতল, এবং বোয়াল এখানে প্রদর্শন করা হয়।
2. স্থানীয় সংস্কৃতি: মেলায় স্থানীয় সংস্কৃতি ও ঐতিহ্য, যেমন লোকগান, যাত্রাপালা এবং মাটির তৈরি জিনিসপত্রও বিক্রি হয়।
3. সমাজিক মিলনস্থল: এই মেলা শুধু মাছ কেনা-বেচার জায়গা নয়, বরং এটি স্থানীয় মানুষের জন্য একটি মিলনমেলা।

ঐতিহ্যের ধারাবাহিকতা:

বর্তমানে শেরপুর মাছের মেলা শুধুমাত্র ব্যবসায়িক উদ্দেশ্যেই নয়, এটি একটি উৎসবমুখর পরিবেশ তৈরি করে, যেখানে নানা প্রজন্মের মানুষ অংশগ্রহণ করেন। অনেক ক্ষেত্রে মেলাকে কেন্দ্র করে বিভিন্ন ধরনের সাংস্কৃতিক অনুষ্ঠান এবং প্রতিযোগিতার আয়োজনও করা হয়।

শেরপুর মাছের মেলার মতো এই ধরনের ঐতিহ্যবাহী আয়োজন বাংলাদেশের সংস্কৃতির একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ অংশ, যা প্রজন্মের পর প্রজন্ম ধরে চলমান রয়েছে।
