Earlier this year, in -50C degree winds, the Google Maps team helped Arctic Eider Society mount the Google Maps Trekker on the rear of a snowmobile to collect stunning Street View imagery from the sea ice of Canada’s Hudson’s Bay. The work was focused near the isolated hamlet of Sanikiluaq on the Belcher Islands off the coast of northern Quebec in Hudson’s Bay. The culture and economy of this community is defined by its relationship with the local Arctic Eider duck, a traditional source of food and clothing - and the resource behind a burgeoning eiderdown export industry. Due to climate change and changes in the sea ice, the arctic eider population near Belcher experienced a die-off in the 1990s and remains under threat.
