The Deschutes Trails Coalition (DTC) launched the $1 for Trails program in 2017 to inspire visitors and residents to the Central Oregon region to make voluntary donations towards the development and stewardship of the regional trails system. While the first few years of the program raised over $100,000 for the trail system through a handful of participating partners, the DTC knows it can do better.

The DTC brought in ECONorthwest and Crosscurrent Collective to better understand the value of trails to the regional economy and determine how to evolve the program in a way that will raise its profile and motivate participation with the goal of increasing donations.
This session gives an overview of the $1 for Trails project and dives into what the team discovered from its research, and the strategic decisions made by the Deschutes Trails Coalition. The panel addresses the objectives, operations, and achievements of the DTC and an assessment of business attitudes towards the $ for Trails Program. It also covers results of a study of the supply, demand, economic value and impact, and equity dimensions of current offerings and future needs for the Deschutes National Forest’s trail network.
