Dam: A dam is a structure built across a river or stream to hold back water, creating a reservoir, lake, or storage for water supply, irrigation, hydropower, and flood control. It controls water flow.
Dams are constructed to withstand significant hydraulic pressure from the water stored behind them.

Retaining Wall: A retaining wall is designed to hold back soil or rock from a building, structure, or area. It is commonly used to prevent erosion or landslides on slopes, but it doesn't deal with water storage or flow.
Retaining walls primarily resist the pressure exerted by earth and sometimes water (in case of groundwater or rain runoff) but are not meant to store large volumes of water.
