COVID-19 has worsened food insecurity in New York to unprecedented levels, with the average number of people served by food pantries citywide now double what it was prior to the pandemic.

In Brownsville— a neighborhood disproportionately affected by both COVID and pre-existing food insecurity— Senior Correspondent Brian Vines met with the leaders of Collective Fare and Isabahlia Ladies of Elegance Foundation to learn how they’re sustaining their community through both short-term hunger and long-term food apartheid.

This is the first installment of Brownsville Rising, a series exploring both the pandemic’s influence on one neighborhood and the individuals rising to meet their community’s increased needs.
