I am not a part of Project Hulmahan nor know anybody from the organization.
However, their exhibit at the Manila Hotel before the official launch (was there May 6) caught my eye and had yo ask the staff there… all they could say is Project Hulmahan so I had to look them up….

Project Hulmahan is an art-driven, mutual aid fundraising initiative in support of community-based food sovereignty, livelihood, and art programs.

As the pandemic hit the already struggling (dying) shoe industry in Marikina City, one of the members of Ladies Who Launch (LWL) who also happens to be one of the co-founders of Bayanihang Marikenyo at Marikenya, met shoes and bag manufacturers in their communities who are closing shop and selling family businesses that have been passed on to them by their grandparents.

We looked for ideas how we can make good use of these “condemned” shoe lasts

With only a vision (and zero capital), we bravely asked to buy all the 500+ pairs of shoe lasts in that factory and started developing the idea on how to turn them into artwork and sell them to raise funds for community-based programs.

After our exploratory discussions, we decided that these three (3) organizations to benefit from this fundraiser:

1. BAYANIHANG MARIKENYO AT MARIKENYA (BM+M) for community kitchen, community garden and community livelihood programs;
2. THE COMMUNITY KITCHEN PROJECT (TCKP) for nationwide disaster response through Community Pantry and Bayanihang Marikenyo at Marikenya
3. UP ARTISTS’ CIRCLE (AC) for community art school for kids that is aligned with the Basic Human Rights Literacy Program
