Pico Veleta 2022

The goal was to climb the Pico Veleta in the Sierra Nevadas - Spain.

We started at 7:30 due to the heatwave, where the temperature was planned to reach over 32 degrees Celsius in Granada.

We had decided to take the route through Monachil and then up to the Sierra Nevadas and Pico Veleta.

Monachil climb was very very good. For every turn you for higher up
And even more impressed by the view. The last part of the climb at around 15km 1200 hm and 14 percent got the legs and body going.

Continuing upwards we have the mandatory “Fika” with a great view
At an elevation of 1620 Hm.

From there on we started the climb and reached the barrier after 34km and 2400 ish Hm. We continued past it and want a bit to far before we realized we missed the correct road towards the top of the Pico Veleta.

Unfortunately there was to much snow there still blocking the way to the top. But that didn´t stop us from trying to puch further.

So we ended up hiking past (carrying the bikes) 3 blocked road areas before realizing we will never get to the top this way.

instead we decided to climb upto the observation centre and there we got up this 1600 meter climb averaging 11 percent. Doing this at almost 2700m was completely devastating and I had to stop
to catch my breath before continuing.
