And You and I is the middle work on the incredible achievement which is the album "Close to the Edge". I see "Close to the Edge" as a symphony with the title song being the first movement in a somewhat modified sonata-allegro form, "And You and I" as being the slow movement, again in a modified sonata-allegro form and "Siberian Khatru" being the final movement in a modified rondo form.

Jon Anderson has said that the "you" of And You and I is "God". It is a profoundly spiritual work with references to the futility of religion and money "coins and crosses never know their fruitless worth" to references of Martin Luther and Jon Anderson's own search for god and meaning "I looked around and could not see life's tempo inside and outside me".

Musically, it starts with a guitar introduction before the exposition's first theme, then repeated, 2nd theme (coins and crosses) and coda before the development section which brings in a new grand theme which eventually climaxes with the lyrics from the first theme of the exposition "coming quickly to terms of all expression laid.." then repeats the guitar introduction before the recapitulation which features a wonderful counterpoint instrumental section before the final coda. Musically speaking it is a highpoint in the works of Yes for its incredible subtlety and beauty.
