Days after Google rolls out a new algorithm update, we typically get phone calls from our clients worrying about the changes in their website ranking. There are many reasons why it may happen. In this episode of Digital Marketing 101, I’m going to cover some of the top ones and give you practical tips on how you can prevent this in the future.

Let’s dive in!

#1 is a penalty.
It’s doesn’t happen very often, but you need to make sure Google is not penalizing your site. Go to Search Console and check it. If there’s a problem, you’ll notice it.

#2 is algorithm update.
Those changes happen daily. You can’t predict it whatsoever, but you can follow Google recommendations to make sure you are compliant with what they expect. Go check in with the news.

#3 is competitors.
This is something you can’t control. Just like you are trying to outrank other companies by a specific keyword, they are trying to outrank you. See if there’s someone on the first page that wasn’t there before.

#4 is backlinks.
In the world of SEO, backlinks are still crucially important. If you lost a link due to whatever reason, this would inevitably affect your ranking. See if there’s a particular page that lost traffic – if yes, search for a problem there.

#5 is site changes.
If you make changes without taking into account all the things that hold this site together, it can negatively affect your ranking. Whenever you are trying to migrate your site or optimize things, be super precise about it.

#6 is user behavior.
Google is not really married to your site. They are married to the user. Look into your website stats to see if the user behavior has changed. Ideally, you want them to spend as much time on your pages as possible.

If you just leave your site alone, it can hurt. It needs constant attention. I’ve just given you 6 things to look for when your ranking suddenly drops. Put yourself on the other side of the problem and figure out a proactive strategy to make sure none of that happens in the future.
