Joseph A. Phillips, baritone, was born around 1877, in Buffalo, New York, and lived most of his life there.

As a young man he toured with road companies in such shows as Havana, De Wolf Hopper's Happyland, and Florodora. Phillips stopped touring in musical comedy by 1911 and took a position as soloist at St. Michael's Episcopal Church in New York City.

Edison promotional literature in 1912 stated that Phillips had studied voice under operatic baritone Pasquale Amato. Other teachers were Thomas Karl and Francis Drake.

His first records were made in late 1910 for the Victor Talking Machine Company. "All That I Ask of You Is Love," issued in January 1911, was among Victor's last single-sided black label discs (5806) and was quickly dropped from the catalog. His one other Victor number, "Afar from Thee, My Love," was available on 16702 from 1911 to 1916 (the reverse side featured one of the last recorded performances of Frank C. Stanley, who died in December 1910). Later in 1911 Phillips became an Edison artist.

His first Edison release was the hunting song "The Chase," released on four?minute Amberol cylinder 901 in February 1912. His first Blue Amberol featured Percy Wenrich's "Put On Your Old Grey Bonnet" (1575).

He remained exclusive to Edison through mid-1916, and as late as 1922 the Edison disc catalog listed 27 Phillips titles. He recorded many duets with Helen Clark, with whom he also made joint recitals on concert stages promoting Diamond Disc technology. In addition to solo and duet work, Phillips contributed to Edison recordings as member of the Metropolitan Mixed Chorus and various uncredited backup choruses.

By mid-1916 he worked as a free-lance artist and eventually recorded for Rex, Canadian Brunswick, Domestic, Okeh, and other small companies, sometimes billing himself as Joe Phillips for lighter numbers. Other pseudonyms include Franklin Kent (Okeh), Harry Lawrence (Rex), and Arthur Strong (Crescent).

He returned to Edison in late 1919 but not as an exclusive artist since he continued to work regularly for Okeh, often with Helen Clark. He recorded relatively few titles for Edison after 1920.

His last Edison session was on April 9, 1925, during which he sang a vocal chorus with Clark on Polla's Clover Gardens Orchestra's rendition of the Black-Moret hit "Moonlight and Roses (Bring Mem'ries of You)." It was released as Diamond Disc 51540 in June 1925 and as Blue Amberol 5018 in August.
