“People will stop watching ODI cricket after Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retire,” former Indian spin legend R Ashwin makes a big claim.

As you all know, two of India's greatest batsmen, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, have already retired from Test and T20I cricket and are still playing in ODIs. However, there's a high probability that both batsmen will retire from this format as well after the 2027 ODI World Cup. But former Indian all-rounder R Ashwin believes that ODI cricket will cease to exist after Rohit and Virat's retirement.

In fact, Ashwin, while speaking to senior journalist Vimal Kumar on his YouTube channel, said, "I'm not sure what the future of ODI cricket will be after the 2027 World Cup. I'm a little worried about it. I'm watching the Vijay Hazare Trophy, but it's a little difficult to watch it the way I watched the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. We also need to understand what the audience wants to see. I think there's still a place for Test cricket, but there's really no place left for ODI cricket."

He further added, "Look, when Rohit and Virat came to play in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, people started watching it. We know that the game is always bigger than the players, but sometimes the game needs the return of players like Rohit and Virat to remain relevant."

Ashwin continued, "The Vijay Hazare Trophy is a domestic ODI tournament that not many people watch. But because Virat and Rohit were playing, people came to watch it. So the question is, what will happen when they stop playing ODIs?"
