1. Transcription. This means learning lines and solos by ear. You don’t HAVE to write it down, in fact I think worrying it down should be a last step to help you remember it and to keep a record of what you learned. Learn it by ear to the point that you can play it without any stimulus.

2. Learning about harmony. Study the harmony of each song you are learning. Don’t just rely on your ear or sticking with the general tonality of the tue you are learning. Learn to play all the chord tones of all the chords of all the songs you play. Need more help with that?

3. Practise. This seems obvious but it’s important to make sure you can fit in regular practise, even if it’s just a small amount. To learn anything new you will@need and extended period of little and often study. Your practise will look different to when you practise classical music, you will be doing all of the above plus trying to improvise with the material you have learned. Maybe trying to improvise with scales, or lines you have worked out plus your knowledge of the chords. Don’t give us and learn to enjoy the process.
