“I think I was 5 years old when we had a family friend - she was talking about me - and she would say, ‘She’s a pretty little girl, but she has no personality.’ That one statement made me doubt myself for years. Like - what does that mean?

I was like, ‘Well, I’ll show her.’ Later on in my life, I saw an audition for Stomp. This is the hottest thing that was happening in New York at the time. We’re gonna go to this audition, and at the end, something in me went, ‘I could get this,’ but my head was going, ‘No, don’t get it. There’s no way I could do the show. What did I get myself into?’

This was the first time I realized I have a nature of kind of sabotaging myself. Weeks pass. I got a phone call: ‘We’d like to offer you a contract.’ ‘Oh my God! I got this job, the dream of a lifetime.’

It’s just amazing how words can really affect someone’s life in a really good way or a really messed up way. I promise that I’ll never say something careless like that. It takes a village to raise people. Let’s raise each other! Uplift each other!”
