There are many myths surrounding IBS. So, let's break it down one by one. First question is, is it true that gluten causes IBS in everyone? Gluten is a component of wheat. Okay, for some, it causes problems, while for most, it may not. So it is not that whoever eats gluten will get the problem. So gluten enteropathy, some people cannot tolerate gluten. Yes, it causes, but not for everyone. So those who have this sort of IBS, better for they to avoid wheat products because wheat contains gluten. One more question people ask: Should IBS be treated, or can it go away on its own? The IBS which has started after certain infections, sometimes people will have some bacterial infection, amoebiasis, or certain viral infections, for some time they may have IBS symptoms, and once that is gone and once the intestines settle down, they can get rid of it. But for many of them, it is a triggering factor, and it persists for many people. Very few people will get rid of their own without proper training or proper intervention, or advice. Lifestyle changes are required for most people to get rid of IBS. Okay. Role of coffee in the management of IBS. People who are taking coffee, should they stop, or will it help? That is one of the most frequently asked questions. Coffee usually stimulates bowel movement. People who have a constipatory type of IBS, where their bowel movement is weak, coffee may help them. But overdoing it also is not good because coffee is a stimulant, a nerve stimulant. Second thing is, people who have loose stools, IBS diarrheal type, may increase in the number of motions. So they'd better reduce the coffee and shift over to tea. Tea is not that harmful compared to coffee for IBS. People ask, if I pass stools every day, can I still have IBS? So IBS doesn't mean that they don't pass stools at all. So even if you're passing stools every day, you can have IBS. In fact, many of the IBS people pass more times. Or some people may not pass more number of times, but they'll have a bloated stomach and abdominal discomfort, passing of a little mucus, and these are also symptoms of IBS. So just because you are passing motion once a day, it doesn't mean that you don't have IBS.
