In 1799, Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh, who belonged to the Rajput dynasty, constructed this beautiful five-storey palace. The Mahal was constructed to provide the royal women with a view of outside life through the windows without being seen by public. Built of red and pink sandstone, the main palace is shaped like the crown of Lord Krishna.

Hawa Mahal's main attraction is its honeycomb-shaped windows or 'Jharokhas' that are decorated with intricate designs. These windows allow the cool breeze to flow, making the palace an ideal summer resort.

The first floor of the palace is called Sharad Mandir. The interior of the mahal is much simpler in comparison to the richly decorated exterior. The walls of the palace are covered in shades of yellow, and doors have decorative carvings.

The second floor is called Ratan Mandir because of its colourful glassworks.

The third floor is called Vichitra Mandir, because here the Maharaja used to worship his God Krishna.

The fourth floor is called Prakash Mandir because it has an open terrace on both sides.

The fifth floor is called Hawa Mandir which is accessible by narrow stairs.

As the sun sets down, the Hawa Mahal is illuminated with lights which adds to the beauty of this palace.
