Parents in Keetmanshoop are worried that their children remain on school waiting lists on the first day of the academic year.

The NBC News team visited several schools and spoke to parents who shared concerns about registration fees and placement delays.

Belinda Basson shared that while she remains optimistic about the year ahead, she is worried about the future of her child. “I feel very good about the opening of the academic year. The only unfortunate thing is that my child is still on the waiting list, so I am waiting until February for him to hopefully get a place. Because I am no longer working, I hope my child can be close to me so I can help wherever I can, such as assisting the school where needed. That's why I am seeking a place at Minna Sachs Primary School, where he will receive education in his mother tongue, Khoekhoegowab.”

Another parent is Marcelle Goeieman, who said, “I am satisfied with the treatment we received here. My only concern is that although parents were ready with their children, they were not ready for the registration fees, as they are not happy with the N$100 registration fee. The waiting list has really disappointed me because we were told to wait until February. If we go to work, what will happen to the children in the meantime? Where will they go?”

Sabina Bloedoog expressed concern over the fact that they are charged for admission. “I was disappointed about the N$100 that I have to pay, and I have three grandchildren, so it’s N$100 per child. I only receive a pension, and the children don't get grant funds. I spoke to the school head and explained my situation, although she did not respond. I still brought the children to school, and I am so happy to see that they were at least placed in the classrooms.”

Parents also shared their expectations for the year.

Bonita Metiboois said, “I am happy with the teachers because they have done so much for the children. This year, parents also need to give their support. I will focus on my three children, and there is a lot of support from the teachers; therefore, parents also need to give their support. I want the principal to continue what she did last year by encouraging and supporting the children, and that's why they passed.”
