DeepRoot Vice President Al Key talks about the company’s legacy of helping build resilient coastal spaces around the world — including the new South Battery Park in New York City.

The Battery Park City Authority has initiated its Coastal Resilience Project (part of the Lower Manhattan Coastal Resiliency (LMCR) Project) is being undertaken by New York City Economic Development Corporation in partnership with NYC Department of Parks & Recreation. The Battery has a legacy of open space and a changing shoreline and today it continues to be a special place for New Yorkers and tourists. The Battery Coastal Resilience Project rebuilds and elevates the wharf promenade in The Battery, staying true to the character and uses of the park while elevating it out of the projected sea level rise in the year 2100. The design, completed by SiteWorks Landscape Architecture / CM, incorporates sustainable and resilient features to protect The Battery and help it withstand and recover from future flooding, including salt-tolerant trees and plantings, an enhanced drainage system (including Silva Cells), and permeable pavers.

 The South Battery Park City Resiliency Project has received certification from the Waterfront Alliance WEDG® (Waterfront Edge Design Guidelines), ensuring that it meets rigorous standards for climate resilience and community access. We are thrilled that Silva Cell was included in the certification, ably installed by Kelco Landscaping Incorporated.
