YouTuber and citizen journalist Nick Shirley sparked controversy after describing what he personally observed at a migrant camp along the Arizona border, where—according to his testimony—much of the infrastructure and supplies come from religious organizations such as Catholic Charities, also known as Catholic Community Services. While walking through the area, Shirley pointed to the presence of numerous blankets, many of them purple and bearing the organization’s markings, which he says illustrates their central role in operating the camp.

Shirley acknowledged that many people believe these organizations “are doing good” because they only see the first stage of the process: migrants crossing the border and receiving humanitarian assistance. However, he argued that this view is incomplete and that, in his opinion, the real issues lie higher up within these structures. According to his account, there are signs of coordination with cartels—an extremely serious allegation that he bases on his direct experience at the site.

The citizen journalist recounted that on the day he was present in the area and searching for additional locations around the camp, no migrants crossed the border at all, a fact he found striking. He further claimed that a local resident told him that for at least two days there were no migrant crossings when CNN and other major news networks were present, something he considers highly suspicious and indicative of deliberate control over migrant flows.

Shirley also stated that in that region of Arizona, so-called “community services” are facilitating free flights for migrants, all allegedly financed by the American Red Cross and Catholic organizations. According to his claims, this support includes not only transportation but also the camp space itself and basic supplies such as the blankets used for sleeping at night.

Shirley’s statements have reignited the debate over the role of certain NGOs and religious organizations in the migrant crisis, as well as concerns about transparency in the use of funds and the coordination of these operations.
