"Well, listen, it is a great victory for us. Even more than us, the French people abroad. It is really a victory obtained through merit and effort. He (Mr. Sarkozy) was well prepared, he worked hard for it. He was the best, we never doubted it, we were supporting him for a long time, here in London."

STORYLINE
French voters living in London gathered at the embassy on Sunday to hear that Nicolas Sarkozy had been elected as their new president.
According to near total results, the conservative, US-friendly Sarkozy scored just over 53 percent against 47 percent for Socialist Segolene Royal.
At the embassy supporters watched on a small screen as exit polls were announced.
Many cheered when they found out that it would be Sarkozy who would be occupying the French presidential palace rather than his opponent Segolene Royal.
The charismatic, but divisive Sarkozy later pledged to be "president of all the French".
The UK delegate for Sarkozy's UMP party, Laurence Azzena-Gougeon, said that Sarkozy had deserved Sunday night's victory.
"He was well prepared, he worked hard for it," she said. "He was the best, we never doubted it, we were supporting him for a long time, here in London."
Sarkozy inherits from outgoing president Jacques Chirac a nation down on itself, its economy lagging behind its peers, its voice in the world fading, and frustration simmering in impoverished, immigrant-heavy suburbs.
The former Interior minister pledged throughout his campaign to reform France.
In January Nicolas Sarkozy visited London to study British Prime Minister Tony Blair's handling of public dissent and to rally support among the capital's large expatriate community.
Blair's office said that the British leader had spoken to Sarkozy on Sunday to offer his congratulations.
