While gluten causes serious health issues when consumed, the good news is that gluten molecules are too large to be absorbed through the skin. But before you breathe a full sigh of relief, it’s still important to be cautious, especially with products like lip balm, lip gloss, or facial products that can easily make their way into your mouth. And if you’re someone who reacts to touching gluten, or you have a child with celiac disease, skincare and personal care products deserve extra attention.
In this episode, I also talk about how skincare products aren’t regulated like food when it comes to gluten labelling. This makes it tricky to identify gluten containing ingredients, especially when they’re disguised under unfamiliar names. I share my personal approach to choosing safe products, how I manage gluten in my home with my family, and why some people with celiac disease can tolerate skin contact while others can’t.
