The Battle of Olustee, fought on February 20, 1864, resulted in a significant Confederate Victory despite being outnumbered. The Union defeat resulted in a notably high casualty rate. The Union forces, numbering about 5,500 under General Truman Seymour, suffered 1,861 casualties (killed, wounded, missing, or captured), representing over 40% of their troops engaged. This was the highest percentage loss for the Union in any Civil War battle. The Confederate forces, approximately 5,000 strong under Brigadier General Joseph Finegan and supported by Brigadier General Alfred Colquitt, sustained 946 casualties, a much lower proportion.

The Confederate victory was decisive, halting the Union’s attempt to advance into Florida’s interior and disrupt its role as a key supplier of beef and salt for the Confederacy. The Union troops, including the notable 54th Massachusetts (an African-American regiment), were forced to retreat 40 miles back to Jacksonville, effectively ending their campaign to seize control of Florida. The battle’s outcome preserved Confederate dominance in the region for the remainder of the war.
