Every dollar raised supports Forward Foundation’s mission to provide critical resources, financial support, and educational opportunities to families facing financial hardship while bridging the gap to long-term stability.
Childcare costs in Virginia can consume up to 35% of a single parent's income, leaving many families struggling to make ends meet despite earning too much to qualify for state assistance. This year, we aim to raise $275,000 to double our childcare subsidy in 2025, directly reducing this financial burden and helping parents focus on building brighter futures for their families. Your support will ensure that single parents in our community have the resources and opportunities they need to thrive.

Forward Foundation was founded in January of 2020 to fill a much-needed gap for working single parents facing financial hardship. By providing access to a childcare subsidy, education, and career development opportunities, single parents are equipped with the resources they need to make them marketable for career advancement and attain financial stability.

Since Forward Foundation’s inception our enrollment has increased by over 700%. This number reflects how dire the need is for the support we provide. Currently one out of four homes in the US are single parent households. There are an astounding 19 million children being raised in a single parent-led home and childcare is one of the largest expenses these parents face. On average 34% of their total household income goes to childcare expenses. Adults and children in single-parent households are also at a higher risk for adverse health outcomes, including mental illness and unhealthy behaviors. Navigating single parenthood is extremely challenging; even more so when dealing with financial hardship.

Single parents must work, but for many of these families the income they make isn’t enough to cover their basic expenses. During what can feel like a very isolating and uncertain time we help families take the steps they need to move forward. Forward Foundation is unique in that we are filling a gap for families that would not otherwise have access to crucial resources, nor be eligible for support. By providing a hand up and not a hand out, these families are able to achieve financial independence leading to long term financial stability.
