A powerful 7.3-magnitude earthquake struck off Alaska's Sand Point coast at 12:37 a.m. local time, shaking the seismically volatile region and triggering a tsunami warning for South Alaska and the Alaska Peninsula. With an epicenter just 87 kilometers south of Sand Point and a shallow depth of 20.1 kilometers, the quake sparked panic in coastal towns.

The National Tsunami Warning Center confirmed tsunami waves and urged immediate evacuation from areas between Kennedy Entrance and Unimak Pass. Alaska, part of the notorious Pacific Ring of Fire, has a history of devastating quakes—most notably the 1964 megaquake that killed over 250 people.
