Описание к видео Rice husk insulation to cavity walls

I want to expound on the efficacy of rice husks used in domestic timber frame construction, in cavity walls as insulation in a Cfa climate. I have scoured the internet over the years and only in recent years do we see a plethora of research and case studies on efficacy.

Rice husks are the outer shells of rice grains that are typically discarded as waste during the milling process. They have been found to have useful properties when it comes to construction, particularly as insulation in domestic timber buildings. In a Cfa climate type (here in Kyushu) which is characterized by relatively mild temperatures and a high level of precipitation, the use of rice husks as insulation can provide a number of benefits.
One of the primary advantages of using rice husks as insulation in a Cfa climate is their ability to effectively insulate buildings while also allowing for the proper ventilation of the interior. Rice husks are naturally porous and have a high level of air permeability, which allows for moisture to escape from the interior of the buildings. This can help prevent the buildup of mould and mildew, which can be a common problem in areas with high levels of precipitation.
Another benefit of using rice husks as insulation in a Cfa climate is their fire resistance. Rice husks have a high silica content, which makes them naturally flame-resistant. This can provide an added level of protection for buildings in case of a fire.
Rice husks are also environmentally friendly. They are an agricultural waste product, and the use of these husks as insulation can help to divert them away from landfills. Additionally, rice husks are a renewable resource, as they can be harvested every year.
In terms of cost, using rice husks as insulation can also be cost-effective. Rice husks are typically readily available and are often less expensive than other types of insulation materials. Furthermore, they can be easily transported and installed, which can help to lower the cost of labour.

One of the downsides of using rice husks is dust. The first time we come into contact with dust is at the milling site when we extract the husks from the silos. And on site as we handle our husk containers a lot of dust is created.

One way to mitigate the effects of dust is of course to use masks, but even better still is to try to handle the husks on a breezy day so that you are up wind.

In the video I show you how I remove most of the dust on breezy days prior to installation inside my garden/tool shed.

In conclusion, rice husks can be an effective insulation material for domestic timber buildings in a Cfa climate type. They provide good insulation properties while allowing for proper ventilation, are fire-resistant, environmentally friendly and cost-effective.

PS : on completion of this project I came across more research on processed rice husks prepared for use in insulation.
