Quantum Chemistry 3.12 - Degeneracy

Описание к видео Quantum Chemistry 3.12 - Degeneracy

Short lecture on energetic degeneracy.

Quantum states which have the same energy are degnerate. If there are N degenerate states, the energy level is said to be N-fold degenerate. Degeneracy often arises due to symmetry in a multidimensional system. 3-fold and 6-fold degenerate states are observed in the three dimensional particle in a box when the lengths of the box in each dimension are the same (i.e. a cube). The likelihood of degeneracy increases as the quantum numbers nx, ny, and nz increase.
