The Art of Yves Chaland - Learning from the Masters

Описание к видео The Art of Yves Chaland - Learning from the Masters

One of my favourite French Comic artist is Yves Chaland. He made comics like, Bob Fish, Le jeune Albert and Freddy Lombard. He published his comics in the 1980s and 1990s, but his style was inspired by the comics from the fifties. Together with comic artists like Joost Swarte Floc’h and Serge Clerc he developed the ‘Atomic Style’. To bring back the Franc Belgium comics like Spirou and Tin Tin also known as the ‘Ligne Clair’.

Yves Chaland was born in 1957 in France, Lyon. He started drawing at a very young age and at age 17 he published his first comics. He studied at the École des Beaux arts in Saint-Etienne. During that time he published his own fanzine L'Unité de Valeur, in 1976, with Luc Cornillon.
Two years later he started working for the French comics Magazine Métal Hurlant. The magazine was founded by Moebius and other artists in 1975 and two years later the English Heavy Metal, saw the light of day. During that time Chaland made pastiches of 50s comics. The comics were collected in the book Captivant. (1979) In these comics you can see the development of Chaland’s style. He moved to Paris and worked on new comics for Métal Hurlant. The magazine was published by the publisher Humanoides Associés who also printed comic books.

In 1981 he published Bob Fish, about a detective in Brussels. The comics were drawn in a fifties style. The book was published in two colours, black and red. With the use of halftones it enhanced the retro style. In that same year Le testament de Godefroid de Bouillon was published in the series The adventures of Freddy Lombard. The book was originally published in two colours. In that same year Chaland started working on the comic of Spirou. His long time dream. The comics were two tiers and were published in the weekly Comics magazine Spirou.

In 1983 Adolphus Claar was published. A science fiction comic about Aldolphus who lives on the moon. The comic has four small stories that were first published in Métal Hurlant.

At this time Yves Chaland was a well respected artist and he gathered a lot of fans in France, Belgium and The Netherlands. The Dutch weekly comics magazine Eppo asked him to make a new Adventure of Freddy Lombard. The story ‘Het olifanten kerkhof was pre-published in Eppo Magazine. In 1984 this story was published in France as Le Cimetière des éléphants. (The elephant cemetery.

Le jeune Albert
In 1985 a spin off character from Bob Fish got his own seriesk. Le jeune Albert. About a scamp character living in the Marolles, a working-class area of Brussels. The first edition was also printed in two colours.

In 1985 the third book in the series The adventures of Freddy Lombard was published. La comète the Carthage. At this time Chaland gradually changed his style in an even more graphic manner. In 1987 John Bravo was published They were a collection of the stories he drew in 1980 for Métal Hurlant.

Two more books were published in the series The Adventures of Freddy Lombard. Vacances à Budapest in 1988 and F-52 in 1989. He still worked on a new story for Spirou, but the publisher of the magazine Spirou did not want to publish it. He reused some of the art in the comic F-52.
Apart from his comics he also made lots of illustrations for advertisements. He also got interested in screen printing and made several screen prints in limited editions.

On July 18th 1990 Yves Chaland died in a car accident at the age of 33. The last silkscreen he published was of a car crash. His widow who is a colorist continued his legacy and a lot of books were published after his death. The only books that were published in English are these two anthologies of The Adventures of Freddy Lombard. To this day Yves Chaland is a big inspiration to comic artists and illustrates and his books and silk prints are in high demand.
