Installing the Fehling engine guards | Tracer Touring #13

I was concerned with dropping the bike and breaking an engine cover so I decided to install the least intrusive crash bars I could find, from a German company called Fehling. These have great build quality and don't ruin the bike's looks. But first, I had to learn some German :)

My translation of the assembly instructions for the engine guards:

• In order to prevent dropping the engine it is essential to follow the correct order of the installation steps!
• Replace the original rear attachment rod with our M 10 x 315 mm threaded rod.
• Remove the original engine screws on the left front and middle.
• Slide one washer on each hole and the 18 x 4 x 15 mm / 18 x 4 x 20 mm spacer tubes in the openings.
• Screw in the front and middle fixing screws and tighten to the specified torque.
• Remove the original engine screws on the right front and middle.
• Slide one washer on each hole and the 18 x 4 x 10 mm / 18 x 4 x 27 mm (with collar) spacer tubes in the openings.
• Screw in the front and middle fixing screws and tighten them with the specified torque.
• Slide the spacer tube 18 x 4 x 10 mm in the rear right threaded rod.
• Align guard and tighten the self-locking hexagonal nuts on both sides of the rear threaded rod to the specified torque.
• Tightening torques for nuts and bolts as specified by the manufacturer (if not specified: M 4: 3Nm, M 5: 5.9Nm, M 6: 10Nm, M 8: 25Nm, M 10: 49Nm, M 12: 85Nm).
• Optional: use fluid bolt lock to further secure the screws and bolts.


Care and Maintenance:
• To achieve a long life of chromed items, they should be regularly cleaned and treated with commercially available chromium care products.
• In powder-coated articles a regular cleaning is important. Damage (e.g. by rocks) can be touched up with paint.
• In both versions, we recommend spraying or rubbing with corrosion protection oil or silicone in the winter.
• All fastening screws must be checked at regular intervals (max. 6 months).
