SMACFUM: The VMC Table Explained for Up to 5° Into the Operating Engine

VMC, or Minimum Control Speed, is the lowest airspeed at which a multi-engine airplane can maintain directional control with one engine inoperative and the other at takeoff power. Manufacturers publish VMC based on a specific set of conditions, summarized by the SMACFUM acronym. Each of these factors affects the actual VMC:

S – Standard Day at Sea Level: VMC is highest on a standard day at sea level, where engine and propeller performance are at their peak. The operating engine produces maximum thrust, creating the greatest yawing force to overcome. As altitude or temperature increases, engine performance drops and VMC decreases.

M – Maximum Power on Operating Engine: The operating engine is set to maximum takeoff power, creating the greatest asymmetrical thrust and the highest VMC.

A – Aft Center of Gravity (CG): An aft CG reduces rudder effectiveness, requiring a higher airspeed to maintain control and increasing VMC.

C – Critical Engine Windmilling: The critical engine is failed and its propeller is windmilling (not feathered), creating significant drag and increasing VMC.

F – Flaps and Gear up: Flaps are set for takeoff and the landing gear is up, both reducing drag and increasing VMC. Extending flaps or lowering gear adds stabilizing drag and decreases VMC.

U – Up to 5 Degrees Bank into the Operating Engine: A slight bank (up to 5°) into the good engine helps reduce VMC by improving rudder effectiveness and countering asymmetric thrust. Wings-level or a slip increases VMC.

M – Most Unfavorable (Lightest) Weight: The lightest legal weight makes the aircraft less stable and increases VMC. Heavier aircraft have more inertia and are easier to control directionally, resulting in a lower VMC.
