Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is a specific subtype of breast cancer characterized by the absence of three hormone receptors commonly found in other types of breast cancer: estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2). This means that TNBC does not have receptors that can be targeted by hormonal therapies.

TNBC tends to be more aggressive and has a higher likelihood of recurrence compared to other types of breast cancer. It primarily affects a younger population and is more commonly diagnosed in premenopausal women and women with BRCA1 gene mutations.

Due to the absence of hormone receptors and HER2 amplification, treatment options for TNBC are limited. Chemotherapy is the mainstay of treatment, often including a combination of drugs. Research efforts are ongoing to develop targeted therapies specific to TNBC and improve treatment outcomes for this subtype of breast cancer.
