Using a TV to play games? You can, in part, credit Ralph Baer for coming up with that idea in 1951. In 1966, he built the first prototype for a home gaming console that could play games without a computer, microprocessor, or software.

In 1972, he licensed it to Magnavox, who released the Odyssey game system in which players attached plastic overlays to the TV screen for a game background.
