STORYLINE
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu officially assumed the reins of power in Israel in Jerusalem on Wednesday, after former leader Ehud Olmert handed over power in a state ceremony at the president's residency.
Olmert told Wednesday's ceremony that he was leaving office with "pride and satisfaction" in his achievements but with regret for failing to reach key goals.
Olmert resumed peace talks with the Palestinians after an eight-year lull. More than a year of direct negotiations failed to achieve any visible breakthroughs.
"I was not fortunate to fulfil my dream and achieve a real peace with our neighbours," he said.
Netanyahu, who heads the hawkish Likud Party which has been historically opposed to territorial concessions or a Palestinian state, joined by his 30-member Cabinet, told the ceremony that there was no time to waste when the economy was in crisis and Israel was confronted with "urgent matters in every major aspect of our lives."
He vowed to tackle the country's most pressing security issues but he gave few details on how he planned to do so in his brief statement.
Following the ceremony, Netanyahu and his family visited the Western Wall.
Speaking from Ramallah, Mohammed Ishtayeh, an advisor to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said it was "alarming" that Netanyahu had not mentioned a Palestinian state in his address.
Netanyahu's reluctance to embrace a Palestinian state, and his decision to appoint ultranationalist politician Avigdor Lieberman as his foreign minister, could put him at odds with an Obama administration eager to promote Mideast peace.
