Every morning, like clockwork, he’d throw on his Columbia hoodie, grab his laptop, and say, “Off to campus!” He even made offhand comments about professors, workload, and group projects. I’d pack him lunch. He’d kiss me goodbye. But something never sat right. There were no textbooks. No student ID. And despite “being swamped,” he never mentioned exams. Then one day, I found a letter on our kitchen counter—from the university. It was unopened. I wasn’t trying to snoop, but curiosity won. It was a notice about non-enrollment. I froze. When I asked him that night, he panicked, said it was a mix-up with the admin. I let it go… but started watching. For three days, I followed him after he “left for class.” He’d drive to a nearby park, change clothes, and hang out in his car. Scrolling. Eating. Napping. For hours. Then, one afternoon, he went into a coffee shop. I waited ten minutes and walked in too. He wasn’t alone. He was with a woman. Laughing. Leaning in. Touching her arm. I didn’t interrupt. I took a photo. Send it to him with one line: “Hope your ‘study group’ is going well.” Then I packed his things, left them by the door, and changed the locks. When he came home, he begged. Said he was “depressed.” I told him: “Lying for a day is a mistake. Lying for a year is a plan.” He moved out the next day. I hope his fake degree keeps him warm.
