In this episode, we visit the Plantation Agriculture Museum in Scott, which explains the cotton and seed production industries in the Arkansas Delta. From its admittance to the Union in 1836, to the early 1940s, cotton was the largest crop in the Natural State. The park hosts a full-scale, authentic demonstration cotton gin, as well as the Robert L Dortch Seed House #5. Dortch's pedigreed seed business in Scott supplied seed stock to 15 southern states.
We also explore the nearby Toltec Mounds, the most significant of the ceremonial sites built by the ingenious tribes of Arkansas, known as the Plum Bayou people. It was believed that the native tribes here were descendants of the builders of the City of Mexico. And we visit Keo, seeing still more examples of gins and the rural fabric of this Delta landscape. Both interpretive sites are part of Arkansas State Parks.
