Hello fellow fishing addicts!

Today my friend Shaun Webb joins me as we try our luck at Kawkawa Lake in Hope BC. A beautiful and at times productive lake nestled in the heart of Hope and only a 2 hour trip from Vancouver!

This lake is one of my close to home, go to lakes to visit in the lower mainland. It's a blast for a family trip on the beach with a bbq or pulling good sized kokanee, trout and even a few surprising species as well.

Kawkawa lake offers fully paved roads from the highway to the boat launch. The parking area is a convenient 30 second hike from the launch and allows room for trucks, cars and trailers. They are also equipped with some of the cleanest bathrooms I have ever come across in a nature site; hats off to Hope city services. The washroom facility is also equipped with an outdoor shower and changing rooms which comes in handy after the swimming activities are over. These are also wheelchair accessible! Picnic tables, benches and garbage bins are also available. This location also comes with a big playground! Kids will be sure to enjoy this amenity.

Kawkawa Lake offers a multi-species family fishery. Kokanee, Rainbows, Cutthroats and Char all reside in this lake. Also note a fair amount of landlocked COHO reside in this lake and although the regulations do not specify this species
is in the lake. To preserve the population it is an unwritten rule not to retain them. Landlocked COHO look quite close to Kokanee but with a few main differences they are much smaller than most kokanee, they have a silver body (like a kokanee) but with a heavily spotted back and lastly they do not have a belly like a kokanee.

Fishing with rod has done a good video on the subject

FISHING METHOD

Today I show Shaun how to use a bait-casting reel, kokanee trolling rod and how to set-up a downrigger for the first time. If you're a beginner or interested in getting into the fishery this video is a MUST WATCH!

Also Shaun teaches me how to rig up the Brads Kokanee cutplug, taking into consideration different leader lengths, hook set back, and bait selection.

Today we are fishing in early June and used the downrigging method. The lures were set roughly 50-100 ft behind the boat and roughly 20-30ft down depending on the fish finder. We fished between 10am-4pm with immediate activity and bites consistent throughout the day. We were trolling roughly between 1.35-1.54 MPH.
The productive set up of the day was with a Gibbs dogtail dodger and a white, orange, pink Brads Kokanee Cutplug combo. The corn bait used was dyed in Wizards kokanee killer korn dye (purple uv) and for the cutplug internal bait we used a mixture of flaked tuna marinated in oil and salmon egg cure.

Shaun also shows some of his DIY dodger selections and tries a few out with surprising results!
