The Government of India has clarified that malnutrition is not recorded as a direct cause of infant and child deaths in official data. This information was shared in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha by Minister of State for Women and Child Development Savitri Thakur. She explained that data from the Registrar General of India shows most child deaths are attributed to immediate medical reasons such as premature birth, low birth weight, pneumonia, birth complications, diarrhoea and infections, with malnutrition reflected indirectly through these conditions. At the same time, the government acknowledged that malnutrition remains a serious challenge and is being addressed through schemes like Mission Saksham Anganwadi and Mission Poshan 2.0. These programmes provide supplementary nutrition to children, pregnant women and adolescent girls under the National Food Security Act, supported by improved Anganwadi centres and the Poshan Tracker to ensure timely nutrition support nationwide.
