Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Overview:

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system (CNS), including the brain and spinal cord. In MS, the immune system mistakenly attacks the myelin sheath, the protective covering of nerve fibers. This leads to inflammation and subsequent damage, which disrupts the normal flow of electrical impulses along the nerves.

Symptoms of MS:

Fatigue
Numbness or tingling in the limbs
Muscle weakness and spasms
Balance and coordination problems
Blurred vision or double vision
Cognitive changes, such as memory problems
Emotional changes and depression
Types of MS:

Relapsing-Remitting MS (RRMS): Characterized by clear episodes of inflammatory activity (relapses) followed by periods of partial or complete recovery (remissions).

Secondary Progressive MS (SPMS): Initially begins as RRMS but then transitions into a progressive form where relapses become less frequent, and disability gradually increases.
Primary Progressive MS (PPMS): Marked by a gradual onset and steady progression of symptoms without relapses.
Progressive-Relapsing MS (PRMS): A rare form characterized by a steady disease progression from the beginning with occasional acute relapses.
Treatment Options:

Disease-Modifying Therapies (DMTs): Medications that can reduce the frequency and severity of relapses, slow disease progression, and limit new lesion formation. Examples include interferons, glatiramer acetate, and monoclonal antibodies.

Symptomatic Treatments: Medications and therapies to manage specific symptoms such as pain, spasticity, depression, and fatigue.
Physical Therapy: Helps maintain mobility and strength, improving overall function and quality of life.

Lifestyle Changes: Regular exercise, a balanced diet, adequate sleep, and stress management can help improve symptoms and overall well-being.
Interesting Facts about MS:

MS is more common in women than in men, with a ratio of about 3:1.
It typically presents between the ages of 20 and 40.

The exact cause of MS is unknown, but it is believed to involve genetic, environmental, and immune system factors.

Vitamin D and sunlight exposure have been linked to a lower risk of developing MS.

Some studies suggest that a healthy diet, including anti-inflammatory foods like fruits, vegetables, and omega-3 fatty acids, may help manage symptoms.

This amazing patient, who came to me pretty broken, has managed to create a life around her that REALLY works. It respects the fact that with her condition she can't quite do and be the same as before... but she has CRUSHED it finding ways to make life work for her!

I LOVE SEEING HER SMILE now!!!!
