Noah and the Flood

Scriptures: Genesis 6:9-22; 7:24; 8:14-19, 9:8-13; 1 Peter 3:18-22

In Genesis 1-11, sin and violence spiral out of control, and God attempts to respond to them in a variety of ways. Noah’s story is a story of God attempting to reboot the entire earth – starting fresh with the family of one faithful person. God calls Noah and invites him to join in God’s work of renewal. This is also a story in which we are told God chooses to restrain God’s self – after the flood, God makes a covenant – a promise – with Noah (and with all humanity) that God will never seek to “start fresh” by destroying things. The Bible, particularly the Old Testament, is a story of a God who makes (and keeps) promises. This promise marks the beginning of that story of God’s faithfulness.
